Ahwazi: Seven Ahwazi Arabs Facing Execution

Following secret trials in Iran’s Revolutionary Court, seven Ahwazi Arab opposition activists have been sentenced to death. This has been condemned by independent experts appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the European Presidency, the European Parliament and members of the British Parliament.

Below is an article published by British Ahwazi Friendship Society:

Seven Ahwazi Arab opposition activists have been sentenced to death in secret trials in Iran’s Revolutionary Court in Ahwaz City, according to reports from the IranPress news service and the Human Rights Activists in Iran group. Two others have been sentenced to two and three and a half years imprisonment, respectively.

In an appeal to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, world leaders and the NGO community, the Ahwaz Human Rights Organisation (AHRO) identified the men as Ali Saedi (25), Valid Naisi (23), Majid Fardipour (Mahawi) (26), Da’iar Mahawi (50), Maher Mahawi (21), Ahmad Saedi, (28), Yousef Leftehpoor (25), Sayed Morteza Musawi and Adnan Biat. Some of the men are known cultural rights activists. All but Musawi and Biat were sentenced to death.

Arrested in August 2007, all men have been held for months in solitary confinement in Ahwaz’s notorious Karoon prison, where many Ahwazi Arab political prisoners have been tortured and executed. As is typical of Revolutionary Court proceedings against political activists, they were denied access to a lawyer.

The initial charges against all nine men were conversion from Shi’ism to Sunnism, followed by charges related to the assassination in June 2007 of Shi’ite radical pro-regime cleric Hashem Saimari and for ‘acting against national security.’

Saimari was renowned for his fiery and sometimes violent rhetoric against Sunni Muslims, who he claimed were heretics. He was a known agent of the Iranian intelligence services while serving as the imam of Zahraa mosque in the poor, Arab-populated Hey al-Thawra district of Ahwaz City.

No Ahwazi Arab group claimed responsibility for the assassination and no evidence was produced to substantiate the government’s charges against the men, who denied all charges of involvement in armed struggle and murder. Past executions based on similar charges have been carried out against innocent political and cultural activists, including some who were already in prison when the crimes they were alleged to have committed were carried out.

The execution of Ahwazi Arab activists has been ongoing since the April 2005 Ahwazi Arab intifada against the regime. Thousands of Arabs have been arrested by the regime and

Beginning of the End

(13)

Iran will never return to the past

Mohammad Kamrani was only 18 years old and studying to take an entrance exam last Friday at Tehran’s Free University medical college. He was the latest victim of the violence perpetrated by the Iranian regime’s suppressive forces against the Iranian people’s uprising. Wounded on July 9, the teenager was arrested and taken to prison. However, due to the severity of his wounds, he was transferred to the hospital and passed away a week later on July 16.

Recently, an Iranian doctor, who talked on condition of anonymity and was either unable or unwilling to recount the tragedies he had witnessed thus far, finally decided to reveal a small part of the unfortunate events he witnessed. He says, "I am a doctor. I was in an ambulance when I witnessed members of the [paramilitary] Bassij stationed on top of Lolagar Mosque in front of the Navab Metro station directly shoot at people using Kalashnikovs and G3 assault rifles. I saw a young man’s brain splattered on the black steps in front of the metro station. … When I was at the Imam Khomeini hospital, I was standing behind the gate when I saw that (unlike the rest of the world where they at least fire tear gas into the air or diagonally) several feet away from me at Tohid Square a young man was directly targeted and hit by a large and hot tear gas canister. It struck his neck, blood gushed out, he fell on the ground and died on the spot. … At Jamalzadeh Street, I was in an ambulance when I saw how Bassijis on motorcycles struck boys and girls from behind with chains. A girl was severely and violently hit on her back with one of these chains; she let out a loud cry, and fell onto the ground face first. … A three-month-old pregnant woman was hit so hard in the head with an electric baton that she suffered a brain injury and after spending a month in coma she eventually died with her unborn child.”

The doctor adds that some assume Neda and several others whose deaths and injuries were captured on camera and broadcast on the internet and TV screens are the only victims of such crimes. But the reality is that the violence committed during the past weeks has been much larger in scope.

Such crimes committed over the past several weeks have added to the already deep river of blood separating the Iranian regime from the Iranian people. Even the mullahs’ Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, has realized now that the situation will not revert back to the past. On July 20, he warned about the prospect of the regime’s downfall as he talked about the deepening rifts and crises within the ruling establishment. While implicitly pointing to former mullahs’ president, Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, he said, “Whoever, in whatever post or position, seeks to steer society into a hazardous path would be despised by the entire Iranian nation.”

“The elites are now faced with

Arrest fuels fear that wave of arrests is intensifying

Amnesty International fears the wave of arrests of civil society activists in Iran is intensifying after the leading lawyer and women’s human rights activist Shadi Sadr was violently arrested in Tehran this morning on her way to Friday prayers.

Shadi Sadr was walking with a group of women’s rights activists along a busy road when unidentified plain-clothed men pulled her into a car. She lost her headscarf and coat in the ensuing struggle but managed briefly to escape. She was quickly recaptured and beaten with batons before being taken away in the car to an unknown location.

Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa Director Malcolm Smart said:

‘This was an illegal, arbitrary and violent arrest in which no attempt was made by the authorities to show identification or provide any explanation for their action.

‘This is the latest of a continuing series of high-profile arrests of Iranians - students, journalists, intellectuals, political and civil society activists - in the wake of protests over the disputed outcome of the presidential election.’

Amnesty International is calling for Shadi Sadr to be immediately and unconditionally released.

Iran and Britain: a tense relationship

A demonstrator holds a placard reading 'Down with British' as protestors burn flags outside the British embassy in Tehran on June 23, 2009

The Iranian government has often accused the West of interfering in its politics.

The United States has been cast as the Great Satan and there has been no shortage of anti-Israeli rhetoric coming from Iran’s leaders.

Protestors in Iran hold up placards stating (l-r) "BBC Persian is against the government of the people" and "Close down the British Embassy and close down the BBC"

Some do not see a distinction between the British government and the BBC

However, in recent days, the authorities have been focussing particular attention on Britain.

Last Friday, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei called Britain the most "evil" of the "hungry wolves in ambush" on Iran.

The Iranian government has expelled two British diplomats and the British have responded by expelling two Iranians.

Nanzanin Ansari is the diplomatic correspondent for the London-based Farsi language weekly newspaper, Kayhan.

The World Today’s Max Pearson asked her why Tehran is pointing the finger specifically at Britain?
